Feminism in Hollyoaks

In lesson, we were asked to apply are learning of feminism to Hollyoaks, i based my work around the character of Nancy Hayton played by Jessica Fox. Fox describes her character saying "Nancy has "always got some kind of bitchy comeback for everyone". She explained that Nancy "says that you don’t have to be the skinny blonde or the skinny brunette, you can be the one who does whatever the hell she likes". Fox has described Nancy as "a bit of a moral compass for the show. She knows what's right and she's often the voice of that." This tells us that Nancy's character is strong and independent.

Ideology

Our school motto is "Respect, Believe, Achieve" This motto gives off a feeling of self belief towards people. Its telling us if we choose to do the right things and put the work in, we will get something great out of it.

I think ideology is very important to a music magazine, as its what influences the buyer in the first place. If we like the look of something, it influences our choice whether to buy it or not. If we see a band we like on the front cover of a music magazine, we instantly want it, the band are always presented in a cool fashion if they are a male band, and in a sensual way if they are a girl band.

The first image is a shot from the front of the school showing and the sky takes up a lot of the background and sets the scene for this picture, the fact the sky is blue creates a sense of calmness to the picture and makes you think that the school looks like a very nice place.

The second image is a shot of the sixth form building and the sky takes up a lot of the background in this photo too. The sky is really dark and grey making the school look gloomy and scary, we instantly think in our minds that the school isn't a very nice place to be.

Photoshop Editing

I used photoshop to show how easy it is to edit pictures and add simple things in that people would not notice, here i've just used a simple example of placing a persons face over another persons face. I cropped a childs face onto Liam Gallagher's face.

Magazine Terminology

Masthead - The main title of the magazine, It is always on the front cover.

Banner - To promote something exclusive for example an interview which they want the reader to identify.

The Main Image - Is the image in the centre of the front page, the picture is usually of a person who will probably have an exclusive interview and a couple of pictures inside the magazine. The main image is the product which sells the magazine.

Buzzword - Usually promotes something that is exclusive or for example where a magazine has a prize to win in will usually say the word "WIN" to promote something the reader can get for free.

Headline - The headline is the main piece of text on the cover of the magazine. The headline will promote the main image on the cover.

Barcode - A code and convention - a barcode is on every cover of every magazine it tells us the price and overall quality of the magazine. A barcode helps the customers understand that this item needs to be paid for. It can also tell the reader which company distributes the magazine.

Anchorage text - usually found underneath the headline and helps the customers understand the headline and the main image.

Puff - an incentive which is place on the cover to make something stand out. Usually by putting text around a shape.

Secondary images - Images that are on the front cover that is maybe not as important as the main image.

Pug - Where the corner of the page is covered and usually has a buzzword inside of it. It is an incentive
to open the magazine.

Features -  Things the readers will find inside the magazine.

  • This lesson, i have used photoshop to edit my picture, the tools i have used to do this are the magic wand tool to edit my background into a white one, this is just a test on photoshop to show my skills

College Magazine Analysis

I think this newsletter and the way it is presented makes our school look very formal, the newsletter shows this by showing the choir at the bottom of the page, this tells the reader that the school offers extra activities for pupils and get everyone involved. It also shows the "Head's Message" at the side of the page showing that the head teacher is actually involved in the school as head teachers most commonly are very rarely seen in schools. The images of graffiti in the canteen give a modern setting to the school showing that the school are thinking about the pupils welfare and making the school look welcoming to them.

The Male Gaze Theory

The Male Gaze, developed by feminist, Laura Mulvey describes how the audience, or viewer, is put into the perspective of a heterosexual male. Mulvey believes that women should enjoy the attention of attracting the gaze, and put themselves in positions to be looked at. The concept of ‘the gaze’ is one that deals with how an audience views the people/person presented.

Feminism

History Of Feminism
In the 1960's, women were expected to follow one path in their lives, to marry in her early 20's, start a family quickly, and then devote her life to homemaking. They were legally subject to their husbands via "head and master laws", they also had no legal rights to any of their husbands earnings or property. The 38 percent of American Women who worked in 1960 were largely limited to jobs as a teacher, nurse or secretary.

Feminism Quotations

  • "I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat."  -- Rebecca West, 20th-century British novelist and journalist
  • "A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men." Gloria Steinem, journalist and second-wave feminist leader
  • "Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression."  Bell Hooks, black feminist author
  • The feminist agenda is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."  Pat Robertson, Christian broadcaster

Major Events: Bra Burning
In the 1960's the phrase "Bra Burning" was well known.  People say that very few women actually burned their bras, but many supported those actions.  Women burned their bras because they felt that it proved a statement or made a stand for Women's Rights.  Another reason they burned their bras was because it was a symbol that showed independence of men at the time.  The women that didn't burn their bras often walked around wearing no bra at all.  This was also meant to show independence of men.

Famous Feminists And Their Beliefs
Black, Clementina (1850's-1923). Social reformer and writer. Born in England. Worked to improve social and industrial conditions for women and girls in England through militant unionism. Wrote `Sweated Labor and the Minimum Wage' (1907) and `Married Women's Work' (1915)

Friedan, Betty (born 1921) Born in the U.S., a famous author and known feminist. She wrote the best-seller, "The Feminine Mystique" and challenged traditional roles of women. Cofounder and president of the National Organization for Women (from 1966-1977). She cofounded the First Women's Bank and convened International Feminist Congress in 1973.

How Feminism Has Changed Over the Years
Feminism has changed over the years for the better as women now have equal rights and now have equal paid jobs, in some areas women earn much more than the man in a relationship and are now much more respected than they used to be.

Semiotic Theory

Semiotics, also referred to as “semiotic studies” and “semiology,” is the study of how humans communicate. In particular, it is the study of how we created meaning and how meaning is understood by the people to whom meaning is being communicated. Semiotics is the study of how we use symbols such as letters and numbers to transfer meaning between parties.

Denotation
'Denotation' tends to be described as the definitional, 'literal', 'obvious' or 'commonsense' meaning of a sign. In the case of linguistic signs, the denotative meaning is what the dictionary attempts to provide.

Connotation
Connotation is created when you mean something else, something that might be initially hidden. The connotative meaning of a word is based on implication, or shared emotional association with a word. Greasy is a completely innocent word: Some things, like car engines, need to be greasy. But greasy contains negative associations for most people, whether they are talking about food or about people.

Semiotic theory applies to music magazines as you can see in the magazine cover to the right. Plan B is smoking, putting up a finger and has a hoodie up. This is going against everything that David Cameron wants to stop or change in this country, Plan B is evidently against his beliefs so he's basically  showing to the people who buy the magazine not to support David Cameron.

Qualitative and Quantative Research

Qualitative Research
This is more factual research, its a lot more open ended questions that would require a more extensive answer rather than a simple yes or no. This is gain a better understanding peoples views on whatever the subject may be.

Quantative Research
This is research that requires simpler answers mainly is the yes or no format. This is more about the quantity of the answers you have more than the quality of them. You normally find this format in questionnaires, it can be put into a graph or tally chart.

What is a Music Magazine?

I think a music magazine is a source of entertainment and information about genres of music and different bands and artists and instruments.

The first ever music magazine in the UK was Banjo Mandolin Guitar magazine (BMG), founded in 1903 by Mr Clifford Essex.

The most popular music magazine in the UK is Q, it even calls itself "The Worlds Greatest Music Magazine"and it is difficult to argue with them.

The future of music magazines doesn't seem to be looking good as the selling prices are dropping quite fast. People use the internet a lot more these days as a source of information and entertainment.

What i like in music is Indie, Folk, BritPop and Rock.

The most popular music at the moment is Indie and Rave music and in magazines at the moment, this genre is what you see mostly, with bands like Kings of Leon and Arctic Monkeys on the front cover.
