College Magazine Analysis

I think this newsletter and the way it is presented makes our school look very formal, the newsletter shows this by showing the choir at the bottom of the page, this tells the reader that the school offers extra activities for pupils and get everyone involved. It also shows the "Head's Message" at the side of the page showing that the head teacher is actually involved in the school as head teachers most commonly are very rarely seen in schools. The images of graffiti in the canteen give a modern setting to the school showing that the school are thinking about the pupils welfare and making the school look welcoming to them. 

The Male Gaze Theory

The Male Gaze, developed by feminist, Laura Mulvey describes how the audience, or viewer, is put into the perspective of a heterosexual male. Mulvey believes that women should enjoy the attention of attracting the gaze, and put themselves in positions to be looked at. The concept of ‘the gaze’ is one that deals with how an audience views the people/person presented.

History Of Feminism
In the 1960's, women were expected to follow one path in their lives, to marry in her early 20's, start a family quickly, and then devote her life to homemaking. They were legally subject to their husbands via "head and master laws", they also had no legal rights to any of their husbands earnings or property. The 38 percent of American Women who worked in 1960 were largely limited to jobs as a teacher, nurse or secretary.

Major Events: Bra Burning

In the 1960's the phrase "Bra Burning" was well known.  People say that very few women actually burned their bras, but many supported those actions.  Women burned their bras because they felt that it proved a statement or made a stand for Women's Rights.  Another reason they burned their bras was because it was a symbol that showed independence of men at the time.  The women that didn't burn their bras often walked around wearing no bra at all.  This was also meant to show independence of men.

Famous Feminists And Their Beliefs

Black, Clementina (1850's-1923). Social reformer and writer. Born in England. Worked to improve social and industrial conditions for women and girls in England through militant unionism. Wrote `Sweated Labor and the Minimum Wage' (1907) and `Married Women's Work' (1915)

Friedan, Betty (born 1921) Born in the U.S., a famous author and known feminist. She wrote the best-seller, "The Feminine Mystique" and challenged traditional roles of women. Cofounder and president of the National Organization for Women (from 1966-1977). She cofounded the First Women's Bank and convened International Feminist Congress in 1973.

How Feminism Has Changed Over the Years

Feminism has changed over the years for the better as women now have equal rights and now have equal paid jobs, in some areas women earn much more than the man in a relationship and are now much more respected than they used to be.

Semiotic Theory

Semiotics, also referred to as “semiotic studies” and “semiology,” is the study of how humans communicate. In particular, it is the study of how we created meaning and how meaning is understood by the people to whom meaning is being communicated. Semiotics is the study of how we use symbols such as letters and numbers to transfer meaning between parties.

Denotation

'Denotation' tends to be described as the definitional, 'literal', 'obvious' or 'commonsense' meaning of a sign. In the case of linguistic signs, the denotative meaning is what the dictionary attempts to provide.

Connotation
Connotation is created when you mean something else, something that might be initially hidden. The connotative meaning of a word is based on implication, or shared emotional association with a word. Greasy is a completely innocent word: Some things, like car engines, need to be greasy. But greasy contains negative associations for most people, whether they are talking about food or about people.


Semiotic theory applies to music magazines as you can see in the magazine cover to the right. Plan B is smoking, putting up a finger and has a hoodie up. This is going against everything that David Cameron wants to stop or change in this country, Plan B is evidently against his beliefs so he's basically  showing to the people who buy the magazine not to support David Cameron.
